

At this time, the most pressing needs identified by the Red Cross are shelter, sanitation and hygiene, food, and hospital bed capacity for post-surgical patients. IN Haiti, most of the technical issues at the airport have been resolved and ground handling services have improved drastically. Airport logistics have improved. A second Red Cross warehouse in Port-au-Prince is now operational. The amount of relief supplies from the Red Cross pipeline available for distribution is increasing daily.
The American Red Cross has sent food to those in need, including 3 million pre-packaged meals and funding for the United Nations World Food Programme effort that will feed up to 1 million people for a month. A gradual transition from general food distributions to food-and-cash-for-work activities is planned, as relief gives way to recovery.
At the request of the Pan American Health Organization and the U.S Navy, the American Red Cross has provided 562 units of blood for the earthquake survivors. Red Cross teams from the Haitian National Red Cross Society and the Columbian Red Cross are providing psychosocial support to survivors and Red Cross workers.
Those wishing to make donations to the American Red Cross International Response Fund – which is used to respond to disasters such as the Haiti Earthquake – may make a donation via 1-800-REDCROSS or via website. The American Red Cross is also receiving money through a third party mobile fundraising effort in the which mobile donors can text “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation.
