Transportation Services

The Arlington County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been providing transportation services for Arlington County seniors to medical appointments and grocery shopping since 1975. Transportation services for senior residents of Arlington County operate with assistance and/or in conjunction with the Arlington County Agency on Aging. The Medical Transportation Service provides free curb-to-curb transportation services within Arlington County to senior Arlington County residents to medically-related appointments on a first-come, first-served basis through volunteer transport utilizing Red Cross leased vehicles, a contract with Blue Top Taxi and dissemination of Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents (STAR) Coupons. The Arlington Red Cross Transportation Program provides shopping trips for Arlington County senior citizens aged 60 and above. These trips are offered once a month on Tuesday to Hunter’s Park at Cherrydale residents and weekly on Wednesdays to North Arlington County residents and Thursdays to Crystal City and Columbia Pike corridor residents. Shopping trips have designated routes, destinations and a regular client list. Currently all designated routes are full to capacity.

The Arlington County Chapter of the American Red Cross (ARC) provides transit services to disabled residents of Arlington County through the Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents (STAR) Program only. The ARC does not have handicap accessible vehicles to transport the disabled. Complimentary coupons are issued to clients age 60 and over who have been issued a MetroAccess number, not to exceed a maximum of two booklets per client per month. Taxi trips, through Blue Top Taxi, are provided on a limited basis for medical appointments outside of Arlington County but inside the Beltway ONLY. 

Eligibility Requirements: Clients must be at least age 60, ambulatory and able to reach the curb unassisted to participate in the medical and shopping transportation program. Eligibility based on need will also be determined during the intake process. Clients who are eligible to use the Super Senior Taxi, MetroAccess and/or Senior Loop are encouraged to do so and permit us to serve clients without those options.

Transportation services are provided weekly, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Transportation services are not provided on Fridays, weekends or holidays. For more information, please contact: The American Red Cross Arlington County Chapter, Transportation Scheduler at 703.841.2747.
