Arlingtonians are currently benefitting from a new Falls Prevention Awareness Program offered by the Arlington Red Cross and Philips Lifeline Medical Alert System. “We launched this effort as part of our overall mission to keep individuals safe in their homes, particularly as more residents are choosing to age in place,” said Gina Gunn Director of Health and Safety Services.
Falls are the leading cause of death and injury in those people 65 and over. More than half (55%) of falls by seniors take place in the home. “By intervening on several risk factors, however, it has been found that falls could be significantly reduced!” noted Gunn.
A few simple tips can prevent injuries from falls or at least alleviate the outcomes of injuries by falls:
- Remove or tape down throw rugs;
- Install grab bars and/or railings, particularly in the bathroom;
- Improve lighting especially in hallways and stairs;
- Have vision checked – poor vision can increase the chance of a fall;
- Review prescription and non prescription medicine for possible side effects that may increase the risk of falling.
Not all falls can be prevented, however, so seniors, particularly those living alone, may want to consider a Lifeline Medical Alert Service – an easy- to- use service which can send help quickly in the event of an emergency.
